Born in Bordeaux, France, Hervé J. Fabre arrived in Argentina in the early 1990’s looking for opportunities to invest in vineyards.
Impressed by the potential and quality of the Malbec, Hervé bought very old Malbec vineyards, planted in 1908, and decided to build his first winery, in 1992. Phebus was created a few years after, in 1996. After recognising the true potential of Malbec, Hervé became the first winemaker in offering super premium Malbecs to the consumer instead of 100% varietal Malbecs. Today, the partnership between Hervé and his wife Diane brings Bodega Phebus alive.
As you would expect from such a pioneer of premium Argentine Malbec, the Phebus range is very much built around the Malbec grape. However the range has expanded over the years to include other interesting and key varieties which demonstrate the incredible potential of these wine growing regions. The quality of all the Phebus wines is a true testament to the incredible winemaking skill of Hervé and his team and illustrates the extreme versatility of Argentina.
Hervé believes that wine should be an expression of the fruit and the vineyard. His use of oak follows this philosophy – his wines are always fruit-driven, and where he uses French oak it is very much in a supporting role, so it never dominates.
